We’ve all been there. We prayed, we planned, we worked hard, and we genuinely believed we were following God’s leading. Yet, in the end, the outcome was… well, not what we expected. The door slammed shut. The opportunity vanished. The relationship dissolved. The project failed. And in those moments, it's easy to conclude: "It didn't work."
From a human perspective, these can feel like outright failures, disappointments, or even signs that we misheard God. But what if, from a divine perspective, those very "failures" were actually successes? What if the things that "didn't work" were precisely what needed to happen for God's greater plan to unfold?
As Christians, we believe in a sovereign God who is always working, even when we can't see His hand. His ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts deeper than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). This truth transforms our understanding of what constitutes "success" and "failure."
Here are a few ways "what didn't work" can turn into God's perfect work:
1. Protection from a Lesser Good (or Hidden Harm)
Sometimes, the path we desperately wanted was a detour from God’s best, or even a path to something harmful we couldn't foresee. A closed door might mean God is protecting us from a situation that would have compromised our faith, led us astray, or brought us pain. That "failure" to get a certain job might have saved us from a toxic work environment. That broken engagement might have shielded us from a deeply unhealthy marriage. God's "no" is often His "I love you too much to let you settle for less."
2. Preparation for a Greater Purpose
The things that "didn't work" may be experiences that refine our character. They strip away our self-reliance, humble and force us to depend fully on God. The setbacks can build resilience, teach valuable lessons, and develop character traits we desperately need for the next season. Joseph's years in prison certainly "didn't work" for his immediate comfort, but they prepared him to lead Egypt and save his family. Moses's long wilderness wandering prepared him to lead a nation. What feels like a dead end might be God strengthening you for a wider road.
3. Redirection to His Perfect Will
We may have a specific vision of what God's will looks like for our lives. But God's vision is infinitely broader and more nuanced. When our plans don't materialize, it might be God gently (or sometimes not-so-gently) redirecting us to a path we did not consider – a path that aligns with His ultimate purpose for our lives and His kingdom. The dream job that fell through might lead to a ministry opportunity you never imagined. The relationship that ended might open the door to a truly God-ordained partnership.
4. Revelation of a Deeper Truth
Sometimes, "failure" reveals something crucial about our hearts, motives, or priorities. It might expose idols we unknowingly hold onto, or areas where we've been operating in our strength instead of relying on God. These moments of unfulfilled desire can lead to profound spiritual growth and a deeper understanding of who God is and who we are in Him.
So, the next time something "doesn't work out" the way you envisioned, pause. Instead of defaulting to disappointment or questioning God's presence, invite His perspective. Ask Him:
- "Lord, what are you protecting me from?"
- "How are you preparing me through this?"
- "Where are you trying to redirect me?"
- "What truth do you want to reveal in this moment?"
It takes faith to see beyond the immediate disappointment, but when we do, we often discover that what we perceived as a closed door was the hand of a loving, sovereign God, gently guiding us to exactly where we need to be. And from His eternal perspective, what "didn't work" actually worked out perfectly.

PRAYER
Here's a short prayer inviting you to receive Jesus Christ, assuring you of His favor and unfailing love:
Dear Lord Jesus,
I come to You today, acknowledging that I am a sinner and that I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins, and for rising again so that I might have eternal life.
Today, I open my heart and invite You to come into my life. I choose to receive You as my personal Lord and Savior. I believe in my heart that You are the Son of God, and I confess with my mouth that You are Lord.
Your Word says in Romans 10:9-10 (NIV), "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved."
Thank You for Your promise in John 3:16 (NIV), "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
From this moment on, I surrender my life to You. I ask You to guide me, teach me, and transform me by Your Holy Spirit. I am confident that with You at the center of my life, I will experience Your great favor and unfailing love through all the years to come.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
