If you don't schedule it, it won't get done: A Christian perspective on intentional living

We've all been there. A brilliant idea for ministry sparks, a crucial task for work looms, or a quiet whisper from the Spirit prompts us towards a personal goal. "I'll get to that," we tell ourselves. "Later." But then "later" becomes tomorrow, tomorrow becomes next week, and before you know it, that divine prompting is a faded memory, the crucial task is a missed deadline, and the personal growth remains a distant aspiration.

The truth is stark, yet simple, and deeply aligned with biblical wisdom: If you don't schedule it, it won't get done.

In our increasingly busy lives, often overflowing with the demands of work, family, and even good intentions, the concept of simply intending to do something is a recipe for inaction. Our days are like precious vessels, and if we don't intentionally fill them with purpose, those purposes will inevitably be displaced by distractions or urgent demands.

The Illusion of "Free Time" and the Call to Stewardship

One of the biggest culprits is the illusion of "free time." We imagine that a block of unscheduled time will magically appear, perfectly suited for that quiet time with God, that act of service, that deep study of His Word, or that vital conversation. But in reality, those blank spaces on our calendar quickly fill up with noise, seemingly pressing matters, or the easy path of least resistance.

From a Christian perspective, our time is a precious gift entrusted to us by God. As Psalm 90:12 teaches us, "So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom." Stewardship isn't just about money or material possessions; it's profoundly about how we manage the moments God has given us.

Without a schedule, our days become reactive, rather than intentionally responsive to God's call. We respond to notifications, jump into convenient tasks, or merely drift. The truly significant pursuits – those that draw us closer to Christ, build His Kingdom, and serve others – are often the first to be sidelined.

The Power of the Scheduled Slot: Embracing Intentionality

Scheduling isn't about rigid legalism or suffocating routine. It's about intentionality – living out our faith with purpose and discipline, honoring God with our time.  When you schedule a task, you are essentially making a commitment not just to yourself, but to the Lord who has gifted you with this day. You are telling your heart, "This is important enough to dedicate sacred time to it."

Here's why this seemingly simple act is so profoundly powerful for the believer:

  1. Prioritization Aligns with God's Will: When you prayerfully schedule something in your calendar, you're compelled to discern whether it truly aligns with your values and God's calling for your life. If you can't find a slot for your daily devotions or an outreach initiative, it's time to re-evaluate what truly holds priority. As Matthew 6:33 reminds us, "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

  1. Reduces Spiritual Distraction: Our minds are often cluttered. A schedule helps quiet the noise, reducing the constant internal debate about "what’s next?" This frees up mental and spiritual energy to be more present in prayer, more focused in study, and more attentive to the Spirit's leading.

  1. Builds Spiritual Disciplines: Consistent scheduling helps cultivate spiritual disciplines like prayer, Scripture reading, fellowship, and service. As 1 Timothy 4:7-8 encourages, "discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come."

  1. Creates Boundaries for Kingdom Work: Scheduling helps you protect your time for what matters most. A designated "Quiet Time" block or "Service Time" on your calendar can help you politely (but firmly) guard against less important intrusions.

  1. Cultivates Good Stewardship: A well-managed calendar reflects good stewardship of the time God has given us. It demonstrates a conscious effort to use our days wisely for His glory.

  1. Combats Procrastination (The Enemy of Progress): Knowing a task has a designated time, and that time is approaching, creates a gentle pressure that can help overcome the urge to procrastinate, allowing us to be "diligent in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord" (Romans 12:11).

How to Start Scheduling with Purpose

Don't let the idea of a perfect schedule paralyze you. Start small, trusting God with your efforts:

  • Identify Your Spiritual Non-Negotiables: What spiritual practices or acts of service absolutely must happen daily or weekly? Schedule these first.

  • Time Block with Intention: Allocate specific, prayerful time slots in your calendar for these tasks. Treat these blocks as sacred appointments.

  • Be Realistic and Grace-Filled: Don't cram too much. Account for rest, family time, and the unexpected. Remember, God's grace covers our imperfections.

  • Include Rest and Refreshment: Even Jesus withdrew to rest. Schedule time for Sabbath, hobbies, and personal connections. These are vital for replenishing your spirit and preventing burnout.

  • Review and Adjust with Prayer: Your schedule isn't set in stone. At the end of each day or week, review what worked and what didn't, and prayerfully adjust for the future, seeking God's guidance.

That ministry opportunity, that in-depth Bible study, that act of kindness for a neighbor, or simply that quiet hour in God's presence you've been craving – they won't magically materialize. They need a home on your calendar, rooted in purpose and intentionality.

So, open your planner, digital or physical, and start scheduling. Give your aspirations, both worldly and spiritual, the time they deserve. Because if you don't schedule it, it truly won't get done, and we are called to be wise stewards of every moment God provides.

PRAYER

Here's a short prayer inviting you to receive Jesus Christ, assuring you of His favor and unfailing love:

Dear Lord Jesus,

I come to You today, acknowledging that I am a sinner and that I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins, and for rising again so that I might have eternal life.

Today, I open my heart and invite You to come into my life. I choose to receive You as my personal Lord and Savior. I believe in my heart that You are the Son of God, and I confess with my mouth that You are Lord.

Your Word says in Romans 10:9-10 (NIV), "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved."

Thank You for Your promise in John 3:16 (NIV), "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

From this moment on, I surrender my life to You. I ask You to guide me, teach me, and transform me by Your Holy Spirit. I am confident that with You at the center of my life, I will experience Your great favor and unfailing love through all the years to come.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
