Serving God: A Life Mission

In a world that often counts down the days to retirement, dreaming of endless leisure and detachment from the daily grind, I find myself marching to a different drumbeat. As a follower of Christ, my perspective on the "golden years" isn't about stepping back; it's about stepping up. My conviction is simple, yet profound: I will serve God until He takes me home; I don't intend to retire.

This is a conviction forged in understanding God's purpose for our lives, a purpose that doesn't end with a certain age or financial goal.

Serving God Until My Last Breath

From the moment we give our lives to Christ, we are called to serve. Not just in formal ministry roles, but in every sphere of our existence. Whether we are raising families, working in the marketplace, engaging with our communities, or sharing a kind word with a stranger, we are always on mission.

In the Bible, we meet individuals who served God faithfully into their old age:

  • Moses led Israel out of Egypt and continued to guide them even when he was over 80.
  • Caleb, at 85, was still ready to take on mountains for God (Joshua 14:10-12).
  • Anna, a prophetess, served God with fasting and prayer in the temple day and night until she met the infant Jesus (Luke 2:36-38).

Their stories remind us that age is not a barrier to God's calling. Our abilities may change, our methods may adapt, but our purpose to glorify Him and serve His Kingdom remains. For me, this means continuously asking: "How can I be used by You today, Lord? What is the next step in Your plan for me?" It could be through prayer, mentorship, volunteering, or simply being a loving presence to those around me.

Living Until I Die: Embracing Every Moment

To say "I will live until I die" means embracing life fully, actively, and with intentionality until my final breath. It's a rejection of the notion that life's vibrancy diminishes with years, or that joy and purpose are reserved for the young.

This isn't about clinging to youth or chasing fleeting pleasures. It's about recognizing that every single day is a gift from God. It’s about cultivating curiosity, maintaining relationships, engaging with the world, and continually learning. It’s about being present in the moment – relishing a cup of coffee, enjoying laughter with loved ones, marveling at a sunset, or simply feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin.

Living until I die means choosing joy, practicing gratitude, and seeking out opportunities to experience God's creation and connect with His people. It’s about being a participant, not just an observer, in the grand tapestry of life.

Why Not "Retire" in the Conventional Sense?

The concept of "retirement" as a complete withdrawal from active contribution often clashes with the Christian call to a lifelong purpose. While financial freedom and rest are certainly blessings to be stewarded, true spiritual "retirement" from God's mission isn't an option.

Our value doesn't come from our jobs or our productive output in the world's eyes; it comes from being children of God. And children of God are called to bear fruit in every season (Psalm 92:14: "They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.").

For me, this means:

  • No Retirement from Purpose: God’s purposes for my life don't have a start and end date based on my age.
  • No Retirement from Growth: There’s always more to learn about God, about myself, and about serving others.
  • No Retirement from Love: My capacity to love, encourage, and build up those around me only deepens with experience.

So, as the years unfold, I pray for grace, strength, and wisdom. I pray for many more opportunities to witness God’s goodness, to share His love, and to fulfill the unique calling He has placed on my life. My desire is to be found faithful, actively serving, and truly living, right up until the moment I cross over into His eternal presence.

Until my last breath, I will praise the Lord!

PRAYER

Here's a short prayer inviting you to receive Jesus Christ, assuring you of His favor and unfailing love:

Dear Lord Jesus,

I come to You today, acknowledging that I am a sinner and that I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins, and for rising again so that I might have eternal life.

Today, I open my heart and invite You to come into my life. I choose to receive You as my personal Lord and Savior. I believe in my heart that You are the Son of God, and I confess with my mouth that You are Lord.

Your Word says in Romans 10:9-10 (NIV), "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved."

Thank You for Your promise in John 3:16 (NIV), "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

From this moment on, I surrender my life to You. I ask You to guide me, teach me, and transform me by Your Holy Spirit. I am confident that with You at the center of my life, I will experience Your great favor and unfailing love through all the years to come.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
