You Are What You Feed Your Mind

    
We are constantly bombarded with stimuli vying for our attention. From the endless scroll of social media to the 24/7 news cycle, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of content we consume. This has a great impact on your inner life, thoughts, and ultimately, your relationship with God.

You are what you feed your mind. This principle is deeply rooted in Scripture. Just as nutritious food fuels our physical bodies, the thoughts and ideas we dwell on nourish our minds and shape our hearts. Consider Philippians 4:8:

"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things."

This powerful verse tells us what mental diet we should feed on. Are we filling our thoughts with negativity, gossip, and worldly distractions, or are we intentionally seeking out truth, goodness, and beauty? This is a matter of choice. If we are not intentional, we are allowing external forces to populate our minds.

The Bible warns us about the consequences of a polluted thought life. Romans 12:2 urges us:

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

If we constantly consume the values and messages of the world – which may be contrary to God's principles – how can we expect our minds to be aligned with His will? Transformation begins with the renewal of our minds, a conscious effort to filter what we allow in.

Think about the parable of the sower in Matthew 13. The seeds represent the Word of God, and the different types of soil represent the different hearts that receive it. Some seeds fall among thorns, which choke out the new growth. These thorns can be likened to the worries, distractions, and negative influences we allow to clutter our minds, preventing God's truth from taking root and bearing fruit.

So, how can we cultivate a healthy mental diet from a Christian perspective? Here are a few practical steps:
  • Be intentional about your intake.
    • Just as you are mindful of the food you eat, be discerning about the content you consume. Be careful about your  exposure to negative or ungodly influences in media, conversations, and entertainment.
  • Prioritize God's Word.
    • Make regular Bible reading and meditation a priority. The Scriptures are the ultimate source of truth and nourishment for our minds and souls. As Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."
  • Engage in prayer.
    •  Prayer is a powerful way to center our thoughts on God and invite His peace and wisdom into our minds. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
  • Seek godly fellowship.
    • Surround yourself with believers who encourage and uplift you, and whose conversations are focused on things that honor God. Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."
  • Practice gratitude.
    • Focusing on the blessings in our lives shifts our perspective from negativity to thankfulness, fostering a more positive and God-centered mindset. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 instructs us to "give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."
In conclusion, the principle that "you are what you feed your mind" is important. By intentionally choosing to fill our minds with truth, goodness, and the Word of God, we allow ourselves to be transformed from the inside out, aligning our thoughts and hearts with His perfect will. Let us be diligent in cultivating a healthy mental diet, so that we may grow in our faith and reflect the likeness of Christ in all that we do.

Father God,

Please help me fill my mind with whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. May the Holy Spirit guide me in making the right choices on what to feed my mind. Lead me to reflect on your values of justice, kindness, and humility, so that I may live these out as I grow in my spiritual walk. May my words and actions bless others and glorify your name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
