The power of asking

It's 12:21 in the morning, and maybe you're up late, scrolling, thinking about something you wish you had, or a problem you wish would just magically disappear. We all do it, right? That silent yearning, that hopeful wishing that things would just happen. But what if I told you there's a powerful, often overlooked key to unlocking what you need, both spiritually and practically? It's simply this: the power of asking.

The Divine Invitation: Ask, and It Shall Be Given

As Christians, we have an incredible foundation for this idea straight from the Bible. Jesus Himself tells us in Matthew 7:7, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you."

Think about that for a moment. This is an invitation, a promise from the Creator of the universe. God, in His infinite wisdom and love, doesn't just allow us to ask; He encourages it. He knows our needs, yes, but there's something profound that happens when we articulate them, when we come before Him with our requests, our desires, and even our struggles.

Why is this so powerful when it comes to God?

It builds relationship: Asking is an act of dependence, and dependence draws us closer to God. It acknowledges that He is the source of all good things.

It clarifies our desires: Sometimes, we don't even fully know what we need until we pray about it.

It demonstrates faith: When we ask, especially for big things, we're showing God that we trust Him to provide, to intervene, to move mountains.

So, are you worried about your future, a tough decision, or a personal struggle? Don't just wish it away. Ask God. Pour out your heart. Be specific. He's listening.

Extending the Invitation: Asking People Around Us

Now, here's where it gets interesting. That divine principle of asking isn't just for our prayer closets. It extends to our everyday lives and our relationships with the people around us. Often, we're afraid to ask. Maybe it's fear of rejection, fear of looking weak, or fear of inconveniencing someone. We fall into the trap of wishful thinking: "I wish someone would help me with this project," "I wish my friend would notice I'm struggling," "I wish my boss would give me that opportunity."

But what if, instead of just wishing, we actually asked?

Need help with a task? "Hey, I'm really swamped with this, would you mind lending a hand for a bit?"

Feeling overwhelmed? "I'm having a tough time right now, do you have a few minutes to talk?"

Seeking an opportunity? "I'd love to learn more about X, is there a chance I could shadow you/take on more responsibility in that area?"

Why should we not be afraid to ask people?

People aren't mind-readers: We often expect others to sense our needs, but they genuinely might not know unless we tell them.

It empowers others to help: Most people actually want to help, especially those who care about you. Asking gives them the chance to be a blessing.

It builds stronger relationships: Asking for help, or for clarification, fosters trust and deeper understanding. It shows vulnerability, which can be a powerful connector.

The worst they can say is "no": And if they do, that's okay. It simply means you might need to find another solution, but you're no worse off than if you hadn't asked at all.

The Benefits of Speaking Out Instead of Just Wishing

Wishful thinking keeps us stuck in a passive state. It’s like standing on the edge of a pool hoping someone will push you in when you could just dive. Speaking out and asking, on the other hand, is active. It’s taking a step of faith and initiative.

Clarity and Direction: When you ask, you get a direct answer (yes, no, or maybe) that helps you move forward. Wishful thinking leaves you in limbo.

Problem-Solving: Asking for help often brings new perspectives or resources you hadn't considered.

Empowerment: Taking action by asking gives you a sense of control and agency over your circumstances.

Growth: Asking forces us to step outside our comfort zones, which is where real personal and spiritual growth happens.

Miracles (Big and Small): Both in our walk with God and in our interactions with others, asking creates the space for unexpected blessings and breakthroughs.

So, the next time you find yourself wishing for something, take a deep breath and remember the power that lies in simply opening your mouth. Whether it's to the God who promises to give good gifts, or to a friend, mentor, or colleague who genuinely wants to help, don't be afraid. Just ask. The outcome might just surprise you.

__________

PRAYER

Father God, thank you for the power of asking you for help, intervention, wisdom, provision, and for everything we need. You are the Great Provider, and so we can fully depend on you. Thank you also that we can ask help from people that you bring into our circle. More than that Lord God, make me a helper so that when people ask me, I can respond properly and genuinely. May I be a blessing to others as you have blessed me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
