The Gift of Time

We usually think of gifts in terms of tangible things: a thoughtful present, a delicious meal, a helping hand. But there's a gift we receive every day that’s both precious and fleeting: time. From a Christian perspective, time isn't just a commodity to be spent; it's a sacred trust.

Every Moment is God’s Gift

The Bible contains numerous verses about the brevity and significance of our lives. Psalm 90:12 is a prayer that asks God to "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." This recognizes our limited time on earth. Each sunrise is a new opportunity to glorify and serve God.

Consider the words of James 4:14: "Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes." This reminds us of the importance of seizing the present moment for our eternal good.

Beyond the Clock: Redeeming the Time

In Ephesians 5:15-16, Paul urges us to "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil." The phrase "making the best use of the time" can also be translated as "redeeming the time." He advises us to reclaim our time by investing it in what truly matters to God.

How do we "redeem the time" in our daily lives?

Prioritizing God: Does time with God—in prayer, in His Word, in worship—take priority in our schedules? Or do we pray in our leftover moments?

Loving Our Neighbor: Do we actively seek opportunities to serve, encourage, and uplift those around us? Every interaction is a chance to reflect Christ's love.

Growing in Wisdom: Are we continually growing in our faith and understanding, becoming more like Jesus?

Fulfilling Our Calling: Are we using our unique gifts and talents to further His kingdom?

Eternal Consequences

The choices we make with our time today affect the future. While we are saved by grace through faith, our faithfulness in stewarding the gift of time impacts our eternal reward and our legacy on earth. When we stand before our Creator, will we have squandered His precious gift, or will we have invested it wisely, bringing Him glory?

Let us embrace each moment as a sacred trust, a divine invitation to participate in God's grand plan. Let's pray for wisdom to number our days, for discernment to prioritize what truly matters, and for the strength to redeem the time, making every moment count for Christ.

How will you steward your precious gift of time today?

PRAYER

Father God, help us to use our time wisely. The days are fleeting, and we realize this even more as we grow older. May we glorify your name in everything we do, and make responsible use of our limited time on earth. We offer our lives to you as a living sacrifice. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
